Phone Left In A Hot Car? What Heat Does To Your Battery
A parked car's interior can get far hotter than the air outside on a sunny day. Apple says to avoid ambient temperatures above 95°F (35°C), which can permanently damage battery capacity, and that even storing a battery somewhere hot can damage it. A dashboard in July goes way beyond that.
What Heat Does
- Battery wear speeds up. Heat is the biggest cause of lost battery capacity.
- Swelling. Repeated heat can swell a battery, and the screen starts lifting.
- Screen damage. Some displays can show discoloration after extreme heat.
If It Got Hot
- Don't put it in the fridge or freezer. Condensation can form inside.
- Let it cool to room temperature in the shade.
- Don't charge it until it's cool.
- Check battery health.
- If the screen is lifting, stop using it. Read Swollen Battery.
Prevent It
Take it with you, use a mount out of direct sun, and don't charge it on the dash in summer.
