iPhone How-To Guide • Battery

Is your battery the reason your phone dies by dinner? Your iPhone can tell you. Here is where to look and what the numbers mean.

Works on: iPhone 6 and newer. iPhone 15 and newer on iOS 17.4 or later also show the cycle count.

How To Check Battery Health

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and older with iOS 16 or later, it is called Battery Health & Charging.
  4. Look at Maximum Capacity. This is how much charge the battery holds compared to when it was new.

iPhone 15 and newer also show the cycle count on that screen. iPhone 14 and older don't, so use Maximum Capacity.

What The Numbers Mean

See a Service message under Battery Health? Apple says the battery has worn down and recommends replacing it.

  • Maximum Capacity: lower means fewer hours per charge. Around 80% is when many people notice it.
  • Peak Performance: if iOS says it is slowing the phone to stop surprise shutdowns, a new battery usually helps.
  • Cycle count: one cycle is using 100% of the battery in total, even over a few days.
