📜 The Short Answer
A third-party repair doesn't cancel your AppleCare+ plan, but it can limit what Apple will cover. Here's what Apple's own terms say, in plain words.
Apple's display support page says repairs by Independent Repair Providers are not covered by Apple's warranty or AppleCare plans, but may be covered by the shop's own warranty.
🔍 What the AppleCare+ Terms Say
We read the current US AppleCare+ terms. Section 4.1 lists what is not covered. In short, Apple may decline to fix:
- damage caused by a third-party part or by service from someone outside Apple's network,
- damage on a device that was opened or changed by someone outside Apple's network, and
- problems with a locked used part that can't be unlocked.
The terms also say the first exclusion doesn't affect coverage that is unrelated to the third-party part or service. Read the full terms for your plan, since they can change.
⚖️ What US Warranty Law Says
The Federal Trade Commission says companies can't void a warranty or deny coverage just because you used someone else's parts or service. They can deny coverage for damage that the part or service caused. See the FTC's post Nixing the Fix.
AppleCare+ is a paid plan with its own terms, so read those terms too. We're not lawyers, and this isn't legal advice.
