iOS 27 added "Ready for Repair or Trade In" to Find My. If you're getting your phone fixed at an independent shop, here's whether you need it.

🆕 What Ready for Repair or Trade In Does

Ready for Repair or Trade In is a new option in iOS 27. Apple says it keeps your device secure and findable in the Find My app during an eligible repair or trade-in.

You turn it on in the Find My app: pick your device, tap More, scroll to Repair or Trade In, tap Enable, and enter your Apple Account password. Apple's steps are on How to use Ready for Repair or Trade In.

🏠 Should You Use It for a Repair With Us?

Which iPhones have it: Ready for Repair or Trade In needs iOS 27, so it works on iPhone 11 and later and iPhone SE (2nd gen) and later. iPhone XS, XR and older can't use it.

Apple built this feature for repairs through Apple and its service network. You can still use it with an independent shop like mine, and if you're worried about your data, I recommend it.

My Advice If You're Worried About Your Data

This is what I always recommend, in this order:

  1. Back up your phone first. Our backup guide shows you how.
  2. Apple recommends turning on Ready for Repair before a repair. Please leave your phone on when you drop it off, so we can check together that it powers on and look at the problem. Then you can turn on Ready for Repair before we start.

Repair mode needs iOS 27 (iPhone 11 and later, iPhone SE 2nd gen and later). After the repair, you can turn it off in Find My by tapping Turn Off next to Repair or Trade In.

♻️ Trading In Your Phone?

Repair or "Unknown Part" messages generally aren't a problem for trade-ins, unless you're trading in directly with Apple. Apple says an Unknown part might lower its trade-in value.

Be Careful (My Opinion)

If a shop that isn't an Apple Store tells you to buy expensive Apple parts before you trade in your phone, be wary. You pay the high cost of the parts, and the phone can be resold at a bigger margin. In my view, that's a predatory tactic. Not sure? Call or text me and I'll give you my honest take. – Steve

📍 What About Find My?

Some repairs need Apple's Repair Assistant to finish pairing the new part. With Find My on, that step usually only works when the phone is somewhere it normally is, like home. Not every repair needs this, so call or text to ask.

You can either finish that step yourself at home (your phone shows a prompt), or turn off Find My before drop-off so we can finish it. On iOS 27, Apple recommends turning on Ready for Repair instead of turning off Find My. Apple recommends never sharing your passcode. You can type it in yourself when it's needed. If you'd like me to finish those steps for you, you can choose to share it. That's always your call, and I only need it for that.
