Guide 12a · Before Your Repair
iPhone How-To Guide • Before Your RepairA few minutes of prep before a repair keeps your data safe and makes drop-off faster. Here is the checklist I'd use for my own phone.
Works on: Every iPhone.
Step 1: Back Up Your Phone
A backup means nothing is lost if something goes wrong. Our backup guide walks you through it.
Step 2: Let iCloud Finish Syncing
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud.
- Check that it says your data is saved to iCloud. If it says it is still syncing, stay on Wi-Fi and check again in a few minutes.
Step 3: Remove Apple Cash And Wallet Cards
- Open Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
- If you use Apple Cash, turn it off. If you don't see Apple Cash, skip this step.
- Open the Wallet app.
- Tap a card.
- Tap the three dots (•••) in the top corner.
- Tap Card Details.
- Scroll down and tap Remove Card. Do the same for each card. You can add them back after the repair.
Step 4: Decide About Find My
Some repairs need Apple's Repair Assistant to finish pairing the new part. With Find My on, that step usually only works when the phone is somewhere it normally is, like home. Not every repair needs this, so call or text to ask.
You have two choices:
- Leave Find My on. Finish the step yourself at home. Your phone shows a prompt.
- Turn off Find My before drop-off. Then I can finish the step here. Turn Find My back on when you get the phone back.
On iOS 27: Apple recommends turning on Ready for Repair before a repair. Please leave your phone on when you drop it off, so we can check together that it powers on and look at the problem. Then you can turn on Ready for Repair before we start. See Ready For Repair (iOS 27).
To turn off Find My:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Find My.
- Tap Find My iPhone.
- Turn off the switch.
- Type your Apple Account password if it asks.
Phone too broken for this? Do it from another device in the Find My app or at icloud.com/find.
Switch won't turn off? Stolen Device Protection is probably on. Away from familiar places like home, turning it off starts a one-hour wait, so do it at home the day before. Steps: Can't Turn Off Find My.
Step 5: Your Passcode And Login
Apple recommends never sharing your passcode. You can type it in yourself when it's needed. If you'd like me to finish those steps for you, you can choose to share it. That's always your call, and I only need it for that.
