Guide 13a · Parts & Repair Rights
iPhone How-To Guide • Parts HistorySaw "Unknown Part" or another label in Settings after a repair? Here is how to read Parts and Service History, and why most notices are nothing to worry about.
Works on: Parts and Service History is on iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), and iPhone 11 and newer. Your phone needs iOS 15.2 or later.
How To Check Parts And Service History
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then tap About.
- Scroll down to Parts and Service History. If you don't see it, the phone has no repair on record.
- Tap a part to see more, such as the date of service.
Which Parts Your iPhone Lists
| iPhone | Parts it can list |
|---|---|
| iPhone 12 and newer | Battery, display, logic board, front camera, rear cameras |
| iPhone 11 models | Battery, display |
| iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, SE (2nd and 3rd gen) | Battery |
What Each Label Means
Apple's labels, quoted from its support page:
- "Genuine": Apple's label for a repair done with Apple's new parts and Apple's calibration steps.
- "Used": Apple's label for an Apple part that was in another iPhone before.
- "Unknown": the part isn't one Apple can check against its records. Apple says this can mean it is a third-party part, wasn't linked to your phone after the repair, or isn't working as expected.
- "Unverified": the logic board came from another iPhone. Apple says this one can affect features like Apple Pay.
- "Finish Repair": the part still needs a short setup step called Repair Assistant.
Is An "Unknown Part" Notice A Problem?
In most cases, no. Your phone keeps working. Calls, apps, the camera and charging all work as normal. Apple shows the notice the first time you unlock after a repair, and once more about five days later. After that it stays in Settings.
Here is what Apple says can change:
- Trade-in value may be lower.
- Face ID and Touch ID are the exception. Apple won't let a third-party part unlock the phone, for security.
- Battery health numbers may not be accurate with a battery Apple can't check. You can check it with our battery health guide.
Used Apple Parts On iPhone 15 And Newer
Since iOS 18, iPhone 15 and newer models can reuse many parts from another iPhone of the same model, including the back glass, battery, rear camera, display, enclosure, speakers, Taptic Engine (the vibration motor), USB-C port and, except on iPhone 15 Pro models, the main microphone. On iPhone 16 and later, the front TrueDepth camera can be reused too, and Face ID works again after Repair Assistant runs. On iPhone 15 models, a reused front camera may need a factory restore. Repair Assistant calibrates the part, and Apple labels it "Used." A used part must come from a phone that isn't locked to someone else's Apple Account.
iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max: after a camera repair, the camera won't work until the repair is finished with Repair Assistant or the phone is restored.
On iPhone 14 and older, a part from another phone usually shows as "Unknown."
If It Says Finish Repair
- Connect to Wi-Fi and make sure the battery is above 20%.
- Update to the latest iOS.
- Go to Settings, General, About, then Parts & Service History.
- Tap Restart & Finish Repair and follow the steps.
