🔎 The Short Answer

An "Unknown Part" message means your iPhone could not match a replaced part to Apple's records. It shows up in Settings after a repair. In most cases it is normal, and your phone keeps working.

Apple says these messages don't affect your ability to use your iPhone, unless the message itself says otherwise. You can read that on Apple's iPhone Parts and Service History page.

So if your screen looks good, touch works, and the battery holds a charge, the message is a label, not a fault.

🗂️ Why Your iPhone Shows It

Apple keeps device information for each iPhone, including its parts and service history. Apple parts are also calibrated at the factory, and that calibration data is stored on Apple's servers.

After a repair, your iPhone checks the new part. For an Apple part, Apple's Repair Assistant downloads that data to finish the repair. That is why Apple-supplied parts pair cleanly.

Apple lists four reasons you might see "Unknown." The part:

  • is not an Apple part,
  • is not working as expected,
  • was not verified and linked to your iPhone after the repair, or
  • was modified or can't be verified.

Most repair shops use high-quality replacement parts that are not made by Apple. Those parts will usually show "Unknown." That's expected.

📱 What You'll See in Settings

Go to Settings > General > About. If your iPhone has been repaired, you'll see a Parts and Service History section. Apple uses these labels:

  • "Genuine" (Apple's label): the repair used Apple parts and Apple's process.
  • Used: an Apple part that was already in another iPhone.
  • Unknown: the part could not be matched, for the reasons above.
  • Finish Repair: an Apple part is in, but Repair Assistant hasn't finished calibrating it yet.

Apple also says you'll get a notice the first time you unlock the phone after the repair, and another one five days later. For displays and batteries, you may see "Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone." That just means Apple updated its records.

🔧 Display, Battery, and Camera

Display: With a non-Apple screen, Apple notes that touch, brightness, True Tone, and color can work differently. A good part and a careful install avoid most of that. See Parts Quality Guide.

Battery: With a non-Apple battery, Settings may not show Battery Health the same way. Charging and run time are what matter. See iPhone battery replacement.

Camera: Front and rear cameras show in Parts and Service History on iPhone 12 and later. Apple warns that on iPhone 18 Pro models, the camera won't work until a repair is finished or the phone is restored.

♻️ Used Apple Parts and Activation Lock

Since iOS 18, Apple lets a used Apple part from another iPhone be calibrated with Repair Assistant. Apple limits this to iPhone 15 and later, and the part must come from the same model. Settings then shows it as "Used."

There's one catch. If that part is still linked to someone else's Apple Account, it's protected by Activation Lock. It has to be unlocked with that account first. Until then, Apple says it shows "Finish Repair" and may not work as expected. Details are on Apple's page If a part is locked to someone else's Apple Account.

⬆️ When the Message Won't Show

If you'd rather not see the notice, you have options:

  • Plug-and-play screens are built to avoid the "Unknown Part" notice without moving chips from your old screen. They are still not Apple parts, so Repair Assistant won't calibrate them as Apple parts. See the Plug-and-Play iPhone Screen Price List.
  • Premium parts are our closest-to-factory option, new or restored. They're quote only. What Settings shows depends on the part and your model, so ask when we quote it.
  • Economy and Standard screens usually show "Unknown" on iPhone 11 and later (except SE models). Your phone still works normally.

💰 Does It Affect Trade-In?

Repair or "Unknown Part" messages generally aren't a problem for trade-ins, unless you're trading in directly with Apple. Apple says an Unknown part might lower its trade-in value. Buying a used phone? Check this label first, as covered in Buying a Used iPhone? 10 Checks Before You Pay.

Be Careful (My Opinion)

If a shop that isn't an Apple Store tells you to buy expensive Apple parts before you trade in your phone, be wary. You pay the high cost of the parts, and the phone can be resold at a bigger margin. In my view, that's a predatory tactic. – Steve

If the Face ID or Touch ID part itself was replaced, it needs Apple's calibration before it can unlock the phone. If you're not sure what you're seeing, start with our iPhone diagnostics guide. Model prices: iPhone 15 prices, iPhone 16 prices, iPhone 17 prices.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Unknown Part Message Bad?

Usually not. Apple says these messages don't affect your ability to use your iPhone. It's a label about the part's history. It generally isn't a problem for trade-ins either, unless you trade in directly with Apple.

Will the Unknown Part Message Go Away?

Apple shows a notice after the repair and again five days later. The label stays in Parts and Service History.

Can Repair Assistant Fix It?

Repair Assistant calibrates Apple parts, including used Apple parts on iPhone 15 and later. It doesn't calibrate non-Apple parts.
