Guide 3i · Screen
Had your iPhone screen replaced, and something feels off? Many repairs use an LCD panel. Some LCDs are decent. Some are poor. Here's how to tell which one you have.

📱 What An LCD Replacement Is
Most iPhones from the iPhone X on came with an OLED screen. (The iPhone XR and 11 came with LCDs.) An LCD replacement is a lower-cost screen that needs a light layer behind it. That extra layer is why LCDs are thicker.
LCD panels vary a lot in quality. Two LCDs for the same phone can look and feel very different.
Is My Screen An LCD?
How to spot it: Turn the brightness up and open an all-black photo in a dark room. If the black looks gray and glows a little, it's an LCD. On an OLED, black areas look truly black because those pixels are off.
⚖️ What Every LCD Gives Up
- About 60 Hz. LCD replacements run at about 60 Hz. If your phone came with 120 Hz ProMotion, scrolling will look less smooth. Refresh rate depends on the screen type and your phone model, so check the listing.
- No auto-brightness. LCD replacements usually don't adjust brightness on their own. You'll set it by hand in Control Center.
- True Tone, with less exact color. Since iOS 18.1, True Tone can be turned on with replacement screens. Apple said it would work "to the best performance that can be provided," so color won't be as exact as the screen your phone came with.
None of this is a defect. It's simply how LCD replacements work. The problems below are where quality really differs.

🔍 8 Signs Of A Low-Quality LCD
1. The Screen Sits Higher In The Frame
Thicker panels can't sit flush with the metal frame.
How to spot it: Run a fingernail from the frame onto the glass. If you feel a lip, or the screen looks raised from the side, the panel is thick.
2. Thicker Black Borders
Many LCDs have wider black borders (bezels) than the screen your phone came with, often most noticeable at the bottom.
How to spot it: Compare the border width with the same model in a store photo or a friend's phone.
3. Super-Thick Panels
Some budget LCDs are much thicker than others.
How to spot it: Your case suddenly fits tight, the screen protector lifts at the edges, or there's a visible gap between glass and frame.
4. Low Resolution Or A Fuzzy Look
Some LCDs have fewer pixels than the screen your phone came with.
How to spot it: Look closely at small text and app icons. If letters look soft or slightly blurry, the panel may be low resolution.
5. Very Low Brightness
Apple notes that maximum brightness might be lower with non-Apple screens (Apple Support). Budget LCDs are often the dimmest.
How to spot it: Turn brightness all the way up and step outside. If the screen is hard to read in daylight, it's a dim panel.
6. Washed-Out Or Off Color
Apple also says color calibration might be off, making the screen look too yellow or too blue (Apple Support).
How to spot it: Open a white page. Does white look blue, yellow or gray? Do photos look faded? Turn off True Tone and Night Shift first so you're seeing the panel itself.
7. Slower Touch Or Ghost Touch
Apple lists missed touches, touches in the wrong spot and accidental edge touches as possible issues with non-Apple screens (Apple Support).
How to spot it: Type a long message. Missed letters, lag, or apps opening by themselves are warning signs.
8. Higher Battery Drain
Apple notes the battery might drain unintentionally with a non-Apple screen (Apple Support).
How to spot it: With the same habits, your battery drops noticeably faster than before the repair. Check Settings > Battery to see which apps use the most power.
🪞 Try A Side-By-Side Check
The easiest test is a side-by-side check. Borrow a phone of the same model, ideally one with its first screen.
- Turn both screens all the way up in Control Center.
- Turn off True Tone and Night Shift on both, in Settings > Display & Brightness, so the colors are a fair match.
- Open the same white web page, then the same photo.
- Compare the black border, the color of white, and the brightness.
- Run a fingernail along both edges, then look at both from the side.
- Scroll the same page fast on both and compare how smooth it looks.
Small differences are normal. Big, obvious ones tell you a lot about the part.
🧭 My Honest Take
If you were sold a thick LCD-style screen and paid over $200, you probably got taken advantage of. That's not on you. Screen prices are confusing, and many shops don't explain what they install.
Before any screen repair, ask what type of screen you're getting. A good shop will tell you plainly.
