True Tone Missing After iPhone Screen Repair?
True Tone adjusts your screen's color to match the light around you. If the True Tone switch disappeared from Settings > Display & Brightness after a screen replacement, here's what's going on.
Why It Goes Away
Each iPhone screen carries its own calibration data. When a new screen goes in, the iPhone doesn't automatically have that data matched up, so True Tone can switch off. iFixit notes that on iOS 17.6 and earlier, True Tone was disabled after a screen replacement even when the new screen came from Apple. On the iPhone 14 guide it adds that auto-brightness was affected too. (iFixit Guide 140593, iFixit Guide 152975)
What Can Bring It Back
- Apple's Repair Assistant (iOS 18 and later). After a part is replaced, Repair Assistant installs calibration data to finish the repair. Update iOS, then go to Settings > General > About > Parts & Service History and tap Restart & Finish Repair. (Apple Support 120579) iFixit notes this restores True Tone on Apple-made screens. (iFixit Guide 140593)
- Moving the screen's calibration data. On some models, repair techs use a screen programmer to read the data from the old screen and write it to the new one. Before Repair Assistant, an iFixit answer noted no programmer yet supported the iPhone 14 series, and the only other route was moving chips from the old screen, a difficult soldering job. The Honest Answer
Whether True Tone comes back depends on your iPhone model, the replacement screen and whether the old screen's data can still be read. It isn't guaranteed on every repair. A quality repair is clear with you about this before the work starts, not after.
Ask us about True Tone for your model when you set up your screen repair, and we'll tell you up front what to expect.
