Guide 3j · Screen
An OLED replacement is usually the closest match to your iPhone's first screen. But OLED panels vary too. Here's what to check on your own phone.

📱 Hard Vs Soft OLED
Replacement OLED screens come in two main types:
- Soft OLED is built on a thin, flexible base. It's thinner, so it usually sits closer to how the screen your phone came with fits.
- Hard OLED is built on a rigid base. It's often a bit thicker.
Both can sit slightly differently in the frame than the screen your phone came with.
What I Use: Soft OLED is always my first choice. On the smallest phones, I may use a hard OLED, because it's less likely to break on a small device. What I install depends on what's available, so call or text (720) 413-8150 and I'll tell you which one I have for your phone.
How to spot it: Run a fingernail from the frame onto the glass and look from the side. A clear lip or raised edge points to a thicker panel. Ask your repair shop which type they used.
🔍 7 Things To Check On An OLED
1. Thickness And Border Differences
Some OLEDs have slightly wider black borders, especially around the bottom edge.
How to spot it: Compare the borders with the same model in a store photo or a friend's phone. Check whether your case still fits like it did.
2. Color Tint Or Shift When Tilted
Lower-quality OLEDs can change color when you tilt them.
How to spot it: Open a white page and slowly tilt the phone left, right, up and down. A strong pink, green or blue tint at an angle is a warning sign.
3. Brightness Differences
Apple notes that maximum brightness might be lower with non-Apple screens (Apple Support).
How to spot it: Turn brightness all the way up and step into daylight. If it's much harder to read than before, the panel is dimmer.
4. Flicker At Low Brightness
OLED screens dim by quickly switching light on and off. Some panels do this in a way that bothers people more.
How to spot it: Turn brightness down low in a dim room. If you notice flicker or eye strain you didn't have before, the panel may be the cause.
5. Early Burn-In Or Uneven Areas
Burn-in is a faint image that stays on the screen. Lower-quality panels may show it sooner, or have uneven patches from the start.
How to spot it: Open a plain gray image full screen. Look for faint shapes, like the keyboard or the top bar, or darker or tinted patches.
6. Touch Quality
Apple lists missed touches and touches in the wrong spot as possible issues with non-Apple screens (Apple Support).
How to spot it: Type a long message and swipe around the edges. Missed letters, lag or random taps are warning signs.
7. Refresh Rate
Some iPhones came with 120 Hz ProMotion for smoother scrolling. With a replacement, refresh rate depends on the screen type and your phone model, so check the listing.
Only soft OLED screens made for Pro and Pro Max models can run up to 120 Hz. Other replacement OLEDs run at 60 Hz.
How to spot it: Scroll a long web page quickly. Compare it with a phone that runs at 120 Hz. If yours looks choppier, it's likely running at 60 Hz.

☀️ Auto-Brightness And True Tone
- Auto-brightness can still work. The light sensor sits behind the screen. An OLED panel can let enough light reach it. Results can vary, and Apple notes light sensor performance might be degraded with non-Apple screens.
- True Tone, with less exact color. Since iOS 18.1, True Tone can be turned on with replacement screens. Apple said it would work "to the best performance that can be provided."
How to spot it: With Auto-Brightness on (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size), move from a dark room into daylight. The screen should brighten by itself after a moment.
🪞 Try A Side-By-Side Check
The easiest test is a side-by-side check. Borrow a phone of the same model, ideally one with its first screen.
- Turn both screens all the way up in Control Center.
- Turn off True Tone and Night Shift on both, in Settings > Display & Brightness, so the colors are a fair match.
- Open the same white web page, then the same photo.
- Compare the black border, the color of white, and the brightness.
- Run a fingernail along both edges, then look at both from the side.
- Scroll the same page fast on both and compare how smooth it looks.
Small differences are normal. Big, obvious ones tell you a lot about the part.
🧭 Picking An OLED Screen
Before any screen repair, ask what type of OLED you're getting, soft or hard, and whether it keeps 120 Hz if your phone had it. A good shop will tell you plainly.
