Messages And SOS Via Satellite: Which iPhones Have It And Is It Still Free?

Guide 8d · Connectivity

Going to Anza-Borrego or the mountains? Newer iPhones can reach help with no cell signal. Here is who has it and what it costs.

Which iPhones Have It

Every iPhone 14 and newer model has Emergency SOS via satellite. Messages via satellite needs iOS 18 or later, and works in the US, Canada, Mexico and Japan.

Is It Free?

Apple says both are free for two years after you first activate an iPhone 14 or newer. So the clock starts when the phone was first set up, not when you bought it used.

Tips Before A Trip

• You need to be outside with a clear view of the sky.
• Try the demo before you go. Search Settings for Emergency SOS.
• Messages via satellite is not for emergencies. Use Emergency SOS for those.
