iPhone 16 Battery Replacement: When And How
The iPhone 16 changed how the battery comes out: instead of pull tabs, Apple uses an adhesive that releases with a small electrical current. Here's what that means for a replacement. This guide explains how iPhone 16 batteries age, how to check yours, what Apple's repair manual says happens during a replacement, and the honest tradeoffs.
How Batteries Age, In Plain Language
Apple calls iPhone batteries consumables. As they age chemically, they hold less charge and can deliver less peak power. When a worn battery can't keep up, iOS can manage maximum performance, including the CPU and GPU, to prevent unexpected shutdowns. (Apple Support 101575) On iPhone 11 and later, Apple says its system reduces those effects, but aging might still eventually lead to noticeable, possibly temporary, effects like longer app launches, lower frame rates, dimmer backlight and lower speaker volume. (Apple Support 106348)
Apple says iPhone 15 models and later are designed to retain 80% of their capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. (Apple Support 106348)
What Apple Says The iPhone 16 Battery Can Do
Apple's tech specs list the iPhone 16 at up to 22 hours of video playback, with a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery. (Apple iPhone 16 Tech Specs) That's a new-phone figure under Apple's test conditions. Your real-world numbers depend on how you use the phone, and they drop as the battery ages.
How To Check Your Battery
Open Settings, tap Battery, then tap Battery Health. (Apple Support 106348) On iPhone 15 and later with iOS 17.4 or later, the same screen shows the cycle count, manufacture date and first use. (Apple Support 106348)
Signs it's time:
- "Service" next to Battery Health. Apple suggests considering a replacement to restore full performance and capacity. (Apple Support 120745) See what the Service message means.
- Capacity near Apple's design target, as described above.
- Slowdowns or shutdowns at normal temperatures with plenty of charge left. See iPhone running slow.
Rule out the temporary stuff first. Apple says low charge and cold temperatures can cause temporary performance effects even on a healthy battery (Apple Support 101575), and lists iPhone's ideal operating range as 0° to 35° C (32° to 95° F). (Apple Support 118431)
Habits That Help A Battery Last
The biggest one is heat: Apple warns very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. (Apple Support 118431) If charging stops at 80%, that may be a setting, not a fault; see iPhone charge limit at 80%. For the rest of Apple's charging tips, see our iPhone battery replacement guide.
Before You Book
Back up, note your exact model, and follow our get your iPhone ready for repair checklist. If the battery looks swollen or the screen is lifting, stop using the phone and read swollen battery or screen lifting first.
Why Not DIY
Apple says an iPhone battery should only be repaired by a trained technician to avoid battery damage, which could cause overheating, fire or injury, and to stop using the iPhone if you suspect battery damage. (Apple iPhone User Guide) Apple's battery manual is written for technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. (Apple Support 120642) iPhone 16 uses Apple's electrically released battery adhesive, so if you want to see what the job involves, our training guide How The iPhone 9V Battery Release Works walks through Apple's steps.
🔧 The Technical Side, Point By Point
1. Other parts come off first. For the iPhone 16, Apple's battery procedure says to remove the back glass before you begin. (Apple Support 120642)
What You'll Notice: The battery is reached from the back, so the screen stays in place.
2. Safety first. Apple's manual includes battery safety steps and warns about fire, injury, data loss or damage to the device if the battery is replaced improperly. (Apple Support 120642) (Apple Support 100299)
What You'll Notice: Your phone may be powered down and partly discharged when you hand it over. That's normal.
3. The adhesive releases electrically. Apple's iPhone 16 and 16e procedure uses a 9-volt battery and clips: the technician peels the battery's silver tab to about 45 degrees, connects the red lead to the tab and the black lead to the lower right grounding screw on the bottom speaker, then holds the connection for 1 minute 30 seconds. (Apple Support 120642)
What You'll Notice: Nothing from the outside, but the battery comes out without bending or prying.
4. If it resists, the manual says stop. Apple says to repeat the steps if you feel resistance, and if the battery still can't be removed, to stop the repair. Apple also notes that if either clip disconnects, the procedure restarts from step 1. (Apple Support 120642)
What You'll Notice: A shop that follows the manual rather than forcing a stuck battery.
5. Clean-up and seating. Apple says the old adhesive is transparent and the enclosure must be wiped 5 to 10 times, then the new battery is pressed into place. After that, the phone is shaken; if the battery is loose, the step is redone with another replacement battery. (Apple Support 120642)
What You'll Notice: A battery that sits flat with no rattle.
6. Related models. The iPhone 16 Plus also uses the 9-volt release (Apple Support 120671), while the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max use pull-tab adhesive strips. (Apple Support 120828) More: how the 9V battery release works.
What You'll Notice: Tell us exactly which iPhone 16 you have when you book.
7. Calibration finishes the job. Apple recommends running Repair Assistant to finish the repair. (Apple Support 120642) It installs calibration data after a part is replaced and is in Settings > General > About > Parts & Service History; it needs Wi-Fi, more than 20% battery and the latest iOS. (Apple Support 120579)
What You'll Notice: A "Finish Repair" prompt until the step is complete.
8. The old battery is recycled. Apple says batteries should be recycled or disposed of separately from household waste. (Apple iPhone User Guide)
What You'll Notice: You don't take the old one home, and it doesn't go in the trash.
A Few Details Worth Knowing
- Pro models are different. iFixit reports the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max still use stretch-release strips, which get more brittle with age, and that the 16 Pro battery has a hard steel case instead of a soft pouch. (iFixit)
Common Mistakes Other Shops Make
"Cheap isn't always cheap, especially if the work is done poorly." — Steve Franchitti
A battery swap is one of the riskiest jobs inside a phone if it's rushed. Here's what can go wrong, and how you'd notice.
- Puncturing or forcing the battery. Apple says only a trained technician should replace an iPhone battery, to avoid damage that could cause overheating, fire or injury. (Apple Support 103269)
- A poor or wrong battery. Apple lists what can go wrong with some replacement batteries: poorly made, previously used, damaged or the wrong battery for your model. It says these can lead to low capacity, improper fit, performance issues or unexpected behavior while charging. (Apple Support 103269)
- Battery health you can't trust. If Battery Health says it can't verify the battery, Apple says the battery health information might not be accurate. (Apple Support 103269)
- Skipping the adhesive. A rushed repair can leave the battery without proper adhesive, so it isn't held firmly in place.
You can check any repair yourself in Settings > General > About. If a part shows Unknown, Apple says it might not be working as expected or hasn't been verified and linked to your iPhone, and it can lower trade-in value. If it shows Finish Repair, the calibration step was never done. (Apple Support 102658)
Our promise: we reseal every phone. We don't usually need your passcode, so when your model supports Apple's Repair Assistant, you can run it after the repair or we'll help you through it.
If Stolen Device Protection is on, some security steps need Face ID or Touch ID or a one-hour wait when you're away from home or work, so finishing setup at home can be easier. (Apple Support 120340)
Honest Tradeoffs
A new battery fixes battery problems, not everything. If the phone is slow because storage is full or an app keeps crashing, a battery won't help; see iPhone apps crashing. Heat matters too: Apple says very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life, and that parked cars can exceed the safe range. (Apple Support 118431) A fresh battery left on a dashboard ages faster.
If the screen is also cracked, doing both in one visit means the phone is opened once; see the iPhone 16 screen repair guide. If you're not sure what's wrong, a Diagnostics check is $35 on its own and free with any repair.
