iPhone Running Slow? Check Battery Health First

If your iPhone takes longer to open apps or stutters when you scroll, the battery could be part of the reason. Here's what Apple says.

Why An Old Battery Can Slow Things Down

Apple explains that all rechargeable batteries are consumables. As they chemically age, they hold less charge and may not deliver peak power as well. To prevent unexpected shutdowns, iOS can manage the maximum performance of parts like the CPU and GPU. (Apple Support 101575)

In more extreme cases, Apple says you might notice: - Longer app launch times - Lower frame rates while scrolling - Backlight dimming - Lower speaker volume - Apps refreshing in the background needing to reload when you open them

Low charge and cold temperatures can also cause temporary changes. (Apple Support 101575)

How To Check Battery Health

  1. Open Settings, then tap Battery.
  2. Tap Battery Health.

There you'll see your battery's maximum capacity compared with when it was new, plus a Peak Performance Capability section. (Apple Support 101575)

How Long Batteries Are Designed To Last

According to Apple, under ideal conditions: - iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to keep 80% of their capacity at 500 complete charge cycles. - iPhone 15 models are designed to keep 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles.

When A New Battery Helps

Apple says that if your battery has aged enough for performance management to have a lasting effect, replacing the battery can help. If Battery Health says your battery is significantly degraded, Apple notes it isn't a safety issue, but you may notice more battery and performance problems. (Apple Support 101575)
