Repair Assistant, Recovery Assistant Or Diagnostics Mode: Which One Do You Need?

Guide 2c · Diagnostics

Explainer • iPhone Tools

Apple now has four tools with almost the same names. One finishes a repair. The others rescue a phone that won't start. Here is which is which.

The Short Version

Tool What it's for Erases your phone?
Repair Assistant Finishes a repair, so a new part is set up right No
Recovery Assistant Fixes a phone that won't start, over Wi-Fi No
iOS Recovery (iOS 27) A rescue menu you open with the side button Only if you pick Erase
Diagnostics Mode Runs checks to find a hardware problem No

Repair Assistant: "Finish Repair"

After a part is replaced, Settings may show Finish Repair next to it. It means the part needs a short setup step. You'll find it in Settings > General > About > Parts & Service History. It needs Wi-Fi, more than 20% battery and the latest iOS.

Which phones: iPhone SE (3rd generation), iPhone 12 and newer. iPhone 11 and SE (2nd generation) are not on Apple's list.

Recovery Assistant

This fixes phones that won't start up properly. It works over Wi-Fi with no computer. Often it starts by itself when the phone notices a problem.

iOS Recovery

New in iOS 27. Turn the phone off, unplug it, and hold the side button. You get a menu with Recovery Assistant, Software Update from a nearby device, Diagnostics Mode, Recovery Mode and Erase. Use the erase option only as a last resort.

Diagnostics Mode

This runs hardware checks over Wi-Fi. Apple support can use it remotely, and you can also run it yourself.

Last Resort: Options That Erase Your Phone

Warning: The Erase option in iOS Recovery, or a Restore from a computer, deletes everything on the phone, including photos, messages and apps.

Only do this after everything above has failed. If you have a backup, you can put your data back afterward. See our backup guide. If you want to keep your data and have no backup, call or text (720) 413-8150 first. There may be another way.
