Explainer • Data TransferNew iPhone with USB-C, but copying photos still takes forever? It may not be your cable or port. Some iPhones are just built for slower wired transfers.
The Short Answer
USB-C is the shape of the plug. The speed depends on the phone. Apple lists iPhone 17 and iPhone Air with USB 2, up to 480 Mb/s. iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have USB 3, up to 10 Gb/s, which Apple says is up to 20 times faster. iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro and 18 Pro models (including Pro Max) also have USB 3. iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 16, 16 Plus, 16e and 17e are USB 2. Lightning iPhones also run at USB 2 speed.
How To Check Your iPhone
- Find your model in Settings > General > About.
- Search the web for your model name plus "tech specs" on apple.com.
- Look under Charging and Expansion for USB 2 or USB 3.
What Helps
- On a Pro model, use a cable rated for 10 Gb/s. Many charging cables are USB 2 only.
- Turn on iCloud Photos, or use AirDrop for a few files.
- Copy in smaller batches.
Transfers stop halfway, or the phone won't show up? The port may be dirty or damaged. I can check it.
