iPhone Rear Camera Repair: Blurry, Shaky Or Black?
Blurry photos, a shaky picture, a buzzing sound from the camera, or a black screen when you open the Camera app: rear camera problems come in a few flavors, and not all of them need a new part. This guide explains how iPhone cameras keep photos sharp, what Apple suggests trying first, what a rear camera replacement involves, and how to tell which situation you're in.

How iPhone Cameras Stay Sharp, In Plain Language
Two systems do most of the work. The first is optical image stabilization (OIS): a gyroscope senses when the camera moves, and the lens moves to cancel it out. The second is closed-loop autofocus, which uses magnetic sensors to measure where the lens is so it can focus accurately. (Apple Support 102175)
Both rely on tiny moving parts. That's why the camera can be sensitive to strong vibration and to magnets nearby, and why a hard drop can leave a camera that shakes, buzzes or won't focus.
Which iPhones Have These Systems
Apple names the models:
- OIS: iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone 7 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). The Ultra Wide camera on iPhone 11 and later doesn't have OIS. (Apple Support 102175)
- Closed-loop autofocus: iPhone XS and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). (Apple Support 102175)
Try These First
Apple's checklist for camera problems: (Apple Support 102514)
- Remove any case, film or accessory that might block the camera or put a magnet near it.
- Clean the front and back lenses with a microfiber cloth.
- Restart your iPhone and update iOS.
- If photos are blurry in low light and you use a lens converter, metallic case or magnetic lens mount, take it off and try again.
If the camera still isn't working properly, Apple says it might need service. (Apple Support 102514) For a black camera screen, Apple's page also points to running iOS Diagnostics. (Apple Support 102514) More on everyday shake and blur: iPhone camera shaky or blurry.
Motorcycles, Scooters And Vibration
This one surprises people. Apple says long-term exposure to high-amplitude vibrations in certain frequency ranges can degrade the OIS and autofocus systems and reduce photo and video quality. Apple doesn't recommend mounting your iPhone on motorcycles with high-power or high-volume engines. On mopeds, scooters and similar vehicles, Apple recommends a vibration-dampening mount and avoiding regular use for long periods. (Apple Support 102175)
If you ride with your phone mounted and the camera started shaking or buzzing, vibration damage is a real possibility.
🔧 The Technical Side, Point By Point
1. The back glass comes off first. On the iPhone 14 (base model), iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, Apple's Camera procedure starts by removing the back glass. (Apple Support 100316) (Apple Support 104906) (Apple Support 120639)
What You'll Notice: If your back glass is cracked too, fixing both in one visit makes sense. See iPhone back glass repair.
2. Lens contamination is a real risk. Apple's iPhone 15 procedure says to cover the camera lenses to prevent contamination. (Apple Support 104906)
What You'll Notice: Clean photos with no specks or haze. Dust trapped under a lens cover shows up as a soft spot in every picture.
3. Calibration finishes the job. Apple recommends running Repair Assistant after replacing the camera. (Apple Support 104906) (Apple Support 120639) It's in Settings > General > About > Parts & Service History and needs Wi-Fi, more than 20% battery and the latest iOS. (Apple Support 120579)
What You'll Notice: A "Finish Repair" prompt in Settings until the step is complete.
4. On the newest Pro models, the camera waits for calibration. Apple says that on iPhone 18 Pro models and iPhone Duo, if you don't finish the repair, you won't be able to use the camera. (Apple Support 120579)
What You'll Notice: On those models, the camera starts working once Repair Assistant is complete.
5. Stabilization problems and lens problems look different. Shake, buzzing or focus hunting point to the moving parts described above. A crack, haze or a spot in the same place in every photo points to the lens cover or the lens itself.
What You'll Notice: Telling us which you see helps us test the right thing first.
Is It The Lens Cover Or The Camera?
The small glass windows on the camera bump are separate from the camera modules underneath. A cracked lens cover can make photos look hazy or show flare, while the camera behind it is fine. If the camera shakes, buzzes, won't focus or shows a black screen, the module is the more likely culprit. We check both before quoting.
Before You Book
A little homework makes the appointment faster and helps us test the right thing:
- Work through Apple's checklist above, including removing magnetic accessories and cleaning the lenses. (Apple Support 102514)
- Try each lens. Switch between the zoom levels in the Camera app. If only one setting is blurry or shaky, that narrows it to one camera module.
- Take a short video while holding the phone still. If the picture jitters or you hear buzzing, note it; it points to the stabilization parts.
- Check the lens covers for cracks under a bright light.
- Back up. Apple's steps: connect to Wi-Fi, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then tap Back Up Now. (Apple Support 108366)
Rear Camera Versus Front Camera
This guide covers the cameras on the back. The front camera is part of a different system on Face ID iPhones: Apple calls it the TrueDepth camera, and it handles Face ID as well as selfies. Apple warns that the TrueDepth camera includes lasers, and that Repair Assistant is required after replacing it to enable security features. (Apple Support 104908) If your problem is on the front, see Face ID not working.
Models Covered In Apple's Manuals
- iPhone 14 (base model): back glass removed first. (Apple Support 100316)
- iPhone 15: back glass removed first; cover the lenses. (Apple Support 104906)
- iPhone 16: back glass removed first. (Apple Support 120639)
A Few Details Worth Knowing
- Sapphire lens covers. Apple's iPhone 12 specs list sapphire crystal lens covers over the rear cameras. (Apple Support 111876)
- Stabilization went mainstream. The iPhone 13 brought sensor-shift optical image stabilization to the standard model's Wide camera. (Apple Newsroom)
Common Mistakes Other Shops Make
"Cheap isn't always cheap, especially if the work is done poorly." — Steve Franchitti
Camera repairs need clean hands and patience. Here's what a rushed one can cause.
- Skipping calibration. Apple's Repair Assistant covers the rear camera on iPhone 12 and later. (Apple Support 120579) On iPhone 18 Pro models and iPhone Duo, Apple says the camera won't work until the repair is finished. (Apple Support 120579)
- Trapping dust under the lens. A rushed camera repair can leave dust or smudges inside, which shows up as spots or haze in photos.
- Pinching a cable. Careless reassembly can strain the camera's thin cables, which can cause focus or camera problems.
You can check any repair yourself in Settings > General > About. If a part shows Unknown, Apple says it might not be working as expected or hasn't been verified and linked to your iPhone, and it can lower trade-in value. If it shows Finish Repair, the calibration step was never done. (Apple Support 102658)
Our promise: we reseal every phone. We don't usually need your passcode, so when your model supports Apple's Repair Assistant, you can run it after the repair or we'll help you through it.
If Stolen Device Protection is on, some security steps need Face ID or Touch ID or a one-hour wait when you're away from home or work, so finishing setup at home can be easier. (Apple Support 120340)
Honest Tradeoffs
Not every blurry photo needs a repair. A smudged lens, a magnetic accessory or a thick case explains plenty of complaints, and Apple's checklist is free to try. A cracked lens cover is often a smaller job than a camera module. On the other hand, if the camera has been shaken by a motorcycle mount, cleaning won't help.
If you aren't sure what's wrong, a Diagnostics appointment ($35 on its own, free with any repair) is the honest first step.
