iPhone Camera Shaky Or Blurry? Causes And Fixes

If photos come out blurry, or the camera view jitters even when you hold still, start with the simple checks. Then look at what Apple says about vibration.

Try These First

  1. Remove anything near the lens. Take off any case, film or add-on lens that might block the camera or put a magnet near it. (Apple Support 102514)
  2. Clean the lenses on the front and back with a microfiber cloth. (Apple Support 102514)
  3. Restart your iPhone and update iOS. (Apple Support 102514)
  4. Low-light blur? If you use a lens converter, metallic case or magnetic lens mount, try taking it off. (Apple Support 102514)

How Stabilization Works

Many iPhones have optical image stabilization (OIS). A gyroscope senses when the camera moves, and the lens moves to cancel it out. Newer models also have closed-loop autofocus, which uses magnetic sensors to hold focus against gravity and vibration. (Apple Support 102175)

Vibration Can Wear It Out

Apple says long-term exposure to high-amplitude vibrations in certain frequency ranges can degrade these systems and reduce photo and video quality. (Apple Support 102175)

  • Apple doesn't recommend mounting your iPhone on motorcycles with high-power or high-volume engines. (Apple Support 102175)
  • On mopeds, scooters and similar vehicles, Apple recommends a vibration-dampening mount or gimbal, and avoiding regular use for long periods. (Apple Support 102175)

Still Shaky?

If the camera still isn't working properly after these steps, it may need service. (Apple Support 102514) We can take a look and talk you through the options.
