Self-Fix Guide • Dim ScreenScreen darker than it should be, or dimming on its own? Most of the time it's a setting. Check these in order.
Works on: Every iPhone. True Tone is on iPhone 8 and newer, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation) and newer.
Step 1: Raise The Brightness
Open Control Center and drag the sun slider up. You should see the screen get brighter right away.
Step 2: Reset Auto-Brightness
- Open Settings and tap Accessibility.
- Tap Display & Text Size.
- Scroll to Auto-Brightness. Turn it off, then back on.
Step 3: Check True Tone
True Tone adjusts color and intensity to match the light around you. In Settings > Display & Brightness, turn it off to see if the screen looks better.
Screen was replaced? Since iOS 18.1, True Tone can work with third-party screens. LCD replacements usually lose auto-brightness; OLED replacements keep it.
Step 4: Check Night Shift And Dark Mode
In Settings > Display & Brightness, tap Night Shift and turn off Scheduled. Night Shift makes colors warmer, which can look dim.
Step 5: Let It Cool Down
A hot phone dims the screen and limits brightness until it cools. Take it out of the sun or off the charger for a while.
Still Dim?
If the screen stays dark on full brightness, or brightness is patchy, the display may need repair. I can check it.
