iPhone Says Liquid Detected? What To Do, Step By Step

Guide 5a · Water Damage

Self-Fix Guide • Liquid Alert

Your iPhone warned you about liquid in the charging port. Don't panic. Here's what to do, and what not to do.

Works on: iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and newer. Older models don't show this alert.

Step 1: Unplug Everything

Unplug the cable from the phone and from the adapter. Charging while wet can damage the pins.

Step 2: Tap Out The Water

Hold the phone with the port facing down. Tap it gently against your hand a few times.

Step 3: Let It Air Dry

Set it somewhere dry with some airflow. Wait at least 30 minutes, then try charging again.

What Not To Do

  • Don't use a hair dryer or other heat.
  • Don't use compressed air.
  • Don't push a cotton swab or paper towel into the port.
  • Don't put it in rice. Small bits can get inside.

Step 4: Alert Comes Back?

Keep drying. It can take up to 24 hours. Try again now and then. A wireless charger still works if the back of the phone is dry.

Step 5: Phone Is Dry But Still Won't Charge

Unplug the adapter from the wall, plug it back in, and try again. Also try a different cable. If the alert shows with only one cable, that cable may be the problem.

Emergency Only

Apple lets you override the alert to charge in an emergency. Charging wet can corrode the port.

Alert Shows Every Time, Even When Dry?

The port may be damaged or corroded. I can check it and give you options.
