Guide 6c · Sound & Mic
Self-Fix Guide • MicrophonePeople can't hear you, or an app won't pick up your voice? Often the app just doesn't have permission. Start here.
Works on: Every iPhone on a recent iOS. On older iOS, the menu is called Privacy instead of Privacy & Security.
Step 1: Check The App's Permission
- Open Settings and tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Microphone.
- Find the app and turn its switch on.
App isn't listed? Open the app and use its mic feature once, so it asks for permission. Tap Allow. If it still doesn't work, contact the app maker.
Step 2: Disconnect Bluetooth
Your voice may be going to earbuds or a car. Turn Bluetooth off in Control Center and try again.
Step 3: Remove The Case And Clear The Openings
Take off the case and screen protector. Gently brush any debris from the small holes on the phone with a soft, dry brush.
Step 4: Test The Mics
Test A: The Bottom Mic (Used For Calls)
- Open the Voice Memos app.
- Tap the red Record button.
- Speak toward the bottom of the phone for a few seconds.
- Tap Stop.
- Play the memo back. You should hear your voice clearly.
Test B: The Top Mics (Used For Speakerphone And Video)
- Open the Camera app and swipe to Video.
- Record a short video while speaking toward the top of the phone.
- Tap the switch-camera button (the circle arrows) to use the other camera.
- Record another short video, again speaking toward the top of the phone.
- Play both videos back. You should hear your voice clearly in each.
All tests sound clear? The mic works. Call trouble may be signal. Muffled or silent in every test? The mic may need repair. I can check it.
Step 5: Restart And Update
Restart the phone. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install anything shown.
