iPhone Side Or Volume Button Not Working? What To Check And When To Repair

A button that sticks, feels mushy or stops responding is easy to ignore until you need it. The side button locks your phone and turns it off. The volume buttons control sound. On newer models, the Action button and Camera Control do even more. When one of them quits, the whole phone feels harder to use.

This post covers what Apple says to check first, how to get around a dead button in the meantime, and what to expect if it needs a repair. Every Apple claim below links to the Apple page it comes from.

The Short Version

  • Take the phone out of its case and look for dirt around the button. Apple says those are the first two checks. (Apple Support 102327)
  • If the button still doesn't work, is damaged or works only sometimes, Apple says it needs a repair. (Apple Support 102327)
  • Until then, AssistiveTouch and Back Tap can do most button jobs from the screen.
  • Back up your phone before any repair. See how to get your iPhone ready for repair.

Which Buttons Does Your iPhone Have?

Apple's controls page sorts iPhones into groups. (Apple Support 105103)

  • iPhone 16 and later models with Camera Control: side button, volume buttons, Action button and Camera Control.
  • iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro models: side button, volume buttons and an Action button.
  • iPhone 15 and earlier models without a Home button: side button, volume buttons and the Ring/Silent switch.

Apple says the side button turns off and locks your iPhone, and pressing and holding it summons Siri. The volume buttons adjust media volume, or the ringer volume when you're not in other apps. (Apple Support 105103)

By default, the Action button turns Silent mode on or off, and you can change what it does. (Apple Support 105103)

Step 1: Do Apple's Quick Checks

Apple's own checklist is short. (Apple Support 102327)

  1. Remove any protective films or cases that might block the button or switch.
  2. Check for debris or dirt around the button or switch, and clean with a soft cloth.
  3. If it still isn't working, is damaged or works intermittently, set up a repair.

Cases matter more than people think. A thick or worn case can press a button part of the way, or sit too far off it to press it at all. Try the button with the case off before deciding it's broken.

Step 2: Rule Out A Setting

Some "broken" buttons are really doing a different job than you expect.

  • Action button: you have to press and hold it, and it does whatever is assigned in Settings > Action Button. Apple notes that for the Controls, Shortcut and Accessibility actions you need to pick a specific option, or the Action button does nothing. (iPhone User Guide: Action Button)
  • Volume buttons: when you're not in an app playing sound, they change the ringer volume instead. (Apple Support 105103)

If the button gives you no click, no haptic tap and no response, it's more likely a hardware problem.

Step 3: Use The Screen Instead

You don't have to stop using your phone while you wait for a repair.

AssistiveTouch

AssistiveTouch puts a button on the screen. Apple says its menu can lock the screen, adjust the volume, summon Siri, restart the device and take a screenshot. (Apple Support 111794)

Turn it on in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch, or ask Siri to "Turn on AssistiveTouch." (Apple Support 111794) For step-by-step screenshots, see Broken iPhone Buttons? Use Back Tap And AssistiveTouch.

Back Tap

On iPhone 8 or later with iOS 14 or later, a double or triple tap on the back of the phone can run an action, like taking a screenshot. Set it up in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap. (Apple Support 111772)

Restarting Without The Side Button

Apple's normal restart uses the side button, with a volume button on Face ID models. (Apple Support 118259) If those buttons are dead, AssistiveTouch has a Restart option. (Apple Support 111794) See how to restart an iPhone without buttons.

🔧 Technical: What's Going On Inside

1. Buttons Are Physical Parts

Buttons are physical parts, so something as simple as a case or dirt can stop one from pressing properly. That's why Apple's first steps are about cases and debris. (Apple Support 102327)

What You'll Notice: a button that feels stuck, gritty or has no click at all.

2. Intermittent Means Repair

Apple lists "works intermittently" alongside "damaged" as a reason to set up a repair. (Apple Support 102327) A button that works only some of the time doesn't usually get better on its own.

What You'll Notice: presses that work one day and not the next, or only when you press hard.

3. The Action Button Is Software Plus Hardware

The Action button runs whatever you assign to it, and some actions need an extra choice or they do nothing. (iPhone User Guide: Action Button)

What You'll Notice: if you can feel the press and the haptic tap but nothing happens, check Settings first.

4. Testing Confirms The Fix

Apple says its diagnostics can help isolate issues, check whether a part needs replacing and verify that a repair worked. (Apple Support 101965)

What You'll Notice: I check every button before and after the repair, with you, so you know it works.

A Few Details Worth Knowing

  • The Action button. On the iPhone 15 Pro, the Action button replaced the Ring/Silent switch and can launch the camera, the flashlight, shortcuts and more. (Apple Newsroom)
  • Camera Control is three sensors in one. Apple says the iPhone 16's Camera Control combines a tactile switch, a high-precision force sensor for the light press and a capacitive touch sensor. (Apple Newsroom) Apple cases work with it through a sapphire crystal coupled to a conductive layer. (Apple Newsroom)

Common Mistakes Other Shops Make

"Cheap isn't always cheap, especially if the work is done poorly." — Steve Franchitti

Buttons are small parts, but a careless repair can affect them, or the rest of the phone.

  • Not resealing. Apple lists disassembling your iPhone, including removing screws, among the things that can lead to liquid damage. (Apple Support 108039) A rushed repair can leave the phone less protected.
  • Mixing up screws. iFixit says every screw must go back exactly where it came from to avoid damaging the iPhone. (iFixit Guide 140572)
  • Straining a button cable. Button cables are thin. A rushed repair can damage one, so a button stops working or works only sometimes.

You can check any repair yourself in Settings > General > About. If a part shows Unknown, Apple says it might not be working as expected or hasn't been verified and linked to your iPhone, and it can lower trade-in value. If it shows Finish Repair, the calibration step was never done. (Apple Support 102658)

Our promise: we reseal every phone. We don't usually need your passcode, so when your model supports Apple's Repair Assistant, you can run it after the repair or we'll help you through it.

If Stolen Device Protection is on, some security steps need Face ID or Touch ID or a one-hour wait when you're away from home or work, so finishing setup at home can be easier. (Apple Support 120340)

Honest Tradeoffs

  • The workarounds are good, but they're not a fix. AssistiveTouch and Back Tap keep you going. They don't repair the button.
  • Waiting can be fine. If it's only a volume button and the workaround covers it, you can decide when to repair it.
  • The side button is harder to live without. It locks, wakes and restarts the phone. Most people want it fixed sooner.
  • DIY is possible, but Apple sets a high bar. Apple says its repair manuals are meant for individual technicians with the knowledge, experience and tools to repair electronic devices. (Apple Support 120623) For more, see "iFixit Near Me"? When To Fix It Yourself.
  • Liquid can be the real cause. If the phone got wet, the button may be only one symptom. Diagnostics are $35 on their own, and free with any repair.

What Happens At Your Appointment

  1. We look at the button, the case and the area around it, and test every button with you.
  2. I tell you what I find and what the repair involves before any work starts.
  3. The menu price is the installed price: part plus labor combined.
  4. After the repair, we test every button again before you leave.
